Chlorine in Dense Interstellar Clouds: the Abundance
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report the first detection of a chlorine-bearing molecular species in the interstellar medium via emission from the J = 1----> 0 transition of HCl at 625.9 GHz toward OMC-1. The relative strengths, widths, and velocities of the resolved hyperfine components are consistent with moderate optical depth emission originating from dense, quiescent molecular cloud material (VLsR = 9 km s1). The overall emission strength implies a fractional abundance off(HCl/H2) "'(0.5-5.0) x 108 , depending on the density of the emitting region. This is approximately an order of magnitude below previous theoretical estimates and a factor of 3-30 below the cosmic abundance of Cl. Recent laboratory work suggests that the lowered fractional abundance of HCl is caused by a combination of depletion onto grains with gas-phase loss processes such as the reaction of HCl with c+. Chlorine Chemistry in the Interstellar Medium
Prior to the launch of Herschel, HCl was the only chlorine-containing molecule detected in the interstellar medium (ISM). However, chemical models have identified chloronium, H2Cl, as a relatively abundant species that is potentially detectable. H2Cl was predicted to be most abundant in the environments where the ultraviolet radiation is strong: in diffuse clouds, or near the surfaces of dense ...
متن کاملThe chemistry of fluorine-bearing molecules in diffuse and dense interstellar gas clouds
We present a theoretical investigation of the chemistry of fluorine-bearing molecules in diffuse and dense interstellar gas clouds, combining recent estimates for the rates of relevant chemical reactions with a self-consistent model for the physical and chemical conditions within gas clouds that are exposed to the interstellar ultraviolet radiation field. The chemistry of interstellar fluorine ...
متن کاملDissociative recombination of cold H D 3 and its interstellar implications
H3 plays a key role in interstellar chemistry as the initiator of ion–molecule chemistry. The amount of H3 observed in dense interstellar clouds is consistent with expectations, but the large abundance of H3 seen in diffuse clouds is not easily explained by simple chemical models. A crucial parameter in predicting the abundance of H3 in diffuse clouds is the rate constant for dissociative recom...
متن کاملLetter to the Editor Constraints on the abundance of solid O2 in dense clouds from ISO-SWS and ground-based observations
The Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) onboard the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) has been used to search for solid O2 in cold dense clouds at 6.45 μm. Additional constraints on the O2 abundance are obtained from analysis of the 4.67 μm solid CO absorption profile observed from the ground. We derive upper limits of 50% and 100% of solid O2 relative to solid CO toward the protostellar sources...
متن کاملWhat Have We Learned from SWAS?
The Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS) has recently completed 5.5 years of successful operation. Among the legacies of the mission has been a greater understanding of the abundance and spatial distribution of H2O and O2 within molecular clouds. We summarize SWAS results and discuss how the measured low abundance of water vapor and non-detections of molecular oxygen are suggestive of ...
